Computer Racks
Computer racks are also known as ‘pizza boxes’ due to their shape, and they are used to hold computer servers. They can be used to hold a number of other things as well, including amplifiers (in the case of 19 inch racks) and other audio equipment. They are a useful way of storing electrical equipment without using up a large and unnecessary amount of floor space for servers and complex configurations of hardware. Many places that use a lot of computer equipment with have their computer racks and the servers that occupy them in a special ‘server room’ so that they are out of the way and hidden from view.
They are mounting systems with holes divided vertically along the structure to allow choice in where servers are located. This configuration is why they resemble pizza boxes and earn said name.
Originally, the system was used to mount the systems involves in railroad signalling relays. The technology since then has changed, but the design has remained largely the same and has lent to their other nick name of ‘relay racks’. Computer racks are a simple and effective way of mounting a large number of servers.
